With the recent announcement of Panasonic’s new flagship video camera, LUMIX GH7, it was also revealed that the camera is designed to support ARRI LogC3 recording. However, this feature will be accessible only through the purchase of an upgrade key, priced at $199.99. ARRI has certified the image processing of the LUMIX GH7’s ARRI LogC3.

Introduction to Panasonic LUMIX GH7

The LUMIX GH7 is Panasonic’s latest entrance into the world of Micro Four Thirds video cameras, which were recently launched. More detailed information about the camera can be referenced in our article. But it is worth noting that Panasonic has incorporated an exciting feature into the LUMIX GH7 – it announced the addition of licensed ARRI LogC3.

Detailed Look at ARRI LogC3 in Panasonic LUMIX GH7

ARRI LogC3 is a logarithmic gamma curve that enhances dynamic range and post-production adaptability. Already in its third iteration, ARRI LogC3 is currently employed in ARRI cameras. Taking an example, the latest ARRI ALEXA 35 uses ARRI LogC4.

Differing from Panasonic’s own V-Log provided free with the camera, ARRI LogC3 access will be acquired separately via a software upgrade key (DMW-SFU3A). This particular decision tailors to the requirements of GH7 users, many of whom may not require ARRI LogC3. ARRI has certified the ARRI LogC3 implementation within the LUMIX GH7, specifically optimizing it for 10-bit recording modes.

Utilizing ARRI LogC3, LUMIX GH7 users can convert the footage to any look from the ARRI library. Moreover, the LUT package for 709 conversion can be stored in the GH7’s LUT Library. Used in conjunction with the REAL TIME LUT function, this allows users to capture videos bearing ARRI LUTs straight out of the camera.

GH7’s Viability in ARRI ALEXA Productions

The introduction of ARRI LogC3 potentially makes the GH7 a feasible option for certain use cases such as a crash cam or drone cam in productions making use of ARRI ALEXA cameras. Panasonic states that the ARRI LogC3 employed in the LUMIX GH7 conforms to the ARRI camera’s standard sensitivity of ISO 800.

Furthermore, the optional ARRI LogC3 upgrade key is compatible with the earlier model, LUMIX GH6, with the exception of the REAL TIME LUT function.

Cost and Release Details

Slated for a July 2024 launch, the Panasonic LUMIX GH7, body only, is priced at $2,197.99. The additional DMW-SFU3A upgrade key can be procured at $199.99.
