Introduction

A recent camera test compared the Canon C400 and Sony Venice to determine their suitability for a multi-camera series on a streaming platform. The Sony Venice, shooting in XOCN-ST, was chosen as the “A” camera, with up to six units used in the field. A smaller camera was needed for gimbal work and tight spaces, capable of shooting similar specs to the Venice. The Canon C400 emerged as a top contender due to its internal RAW capabilities, autofocus, and compact size.

Camera Selection Process

Several cameras were considered, including the RED KOMODO, Blackmagic Pocket 6K, Sony FX6 with an external recorder, and the Canon C400. The primary requirement was that the camera must fit on a DJI Ronin RS4 and deliver 12-bit 444 RGB footage. The Canon C400 met these criteria and was chosen for further testing.

Initial Tests

Interview Setup

The first test involved an interview setup, filming in both full-frame 6K and Super 35 4K. The Canon C400 and Sony Venice have similar sensor resolutions and crop modes. Both cameras were tested with a Sigma FF 50mm prime and a Canon Flex zoom 45-135mm, swapping lenses and positions to account for any color shift.

Outdoor Test

The cameras were also tested outside using the Sigma 50mm FF prime. For this test, the C400 was rigged on the DJI Ronin RS4 to demonstrate its capabilities for the production. The autofocus performed exceptionally well, which would save time in the field.

Results and Approval

The tests were uploaded for review, including a color space transformation LUT and LUTs for both cameras. The Canon C400 received final approval as the “B” camera based on the tests. The colorist had no issues matching the footage from both cameras, making the C400 a viable option for future productions.

Color-Conforming LUTs

A colorist and tech expert created color-conforming LUTs to ensure seamless integration in post-production. He advised applying the post-LUT in Resolve as the first node in the node tree before any creative adjustments. This ensures the footage is normalized to the Venice space for further grading.

Conclusion

The Canon C400 performed well above its price point, producing an image comparable to the Sony Venice. This test aims to help others decide on the best camera for their projects. It highlights the potential for mixing camera brands without compromising on quality, despite common industry reluctance. Thorough testing is essential before field deployment, and this comparison serves as a valuable resource for future productions.
