Introduction

At IBC 2024 in Amsterdam, DZOFilm showcased their new Simera-C lenses.

These compact and fast prime lenses are designed to cater to various filming needs. The series includes the following focal lengths:

  • 21mm T1.5
  • 28mm T1.5
  • 35mm T1.5
  • 50mm T1.5
  • 75mm T1.5

Design and Compatibility

Compact and Lightweight

The Simera-C lenses are lightweight and compact, making them a versatile choice for filmmakers. They are positioned as DZOFilm’s response to the more expensive Cooke SP3 lenses. These lenses are compatible with a wide range of cameras, from entry-level mirrorless models and the DJI Ronin 4D to ARRI Cinema Cameras.

Rehousing and Modifications

Although the name “Simera” might sound familiar because of Thypoch’s existing range, these lenses are essentially rehoused versions made by DZOFilm. Thypoch is a brand under DZOFilm. Key modifications include:

  • Removal of the depth-of-field indicator and focus ring resistance point.
  • Relocation of the focus ring to the front and the aperture ring to the rear.
  • Addition of industry-standard cine gears.
  • Increase in aperture blades to 16 for smoother, rounder bokeh.

Image Characteristics

Visual Quality

The Simera-C lenses are designed to offer a neutral look with a vintage organic texture. They feature a fast aperture, providing narrative depth and spatial separation. This results in smooth, rounded bokeh with controlled flaring and well-balanced contrast.

Optical Elements

Each lens incorporates aspherical elements, ED elements, and high-refractive-index elements. This combination ensures high sharpness and a compact form factor. Additionally, the lenses have a multi-layer anti-reflective coating design. This design moderately retains a soft blue flare while effectively suppressing ghosting.

Performance Comparison

DZOFilm claims that the Simera-C lenses address issues found in competing products. They improve upon the low sharpness and field curvature at maximum aperture seen in the Dulens T2.4 lenses. They also correct the noticeable chromatic aberration and purple fringing found in Sirui lenses, offering superior resolution, chromatic aberration control, and out-of-focus bokeh performance.

Build and Durability

Size and Weight

The Simera-C lenses weigh between 390-470g. The 28mm, 35mm, and 50mm T1.5 lenses share the same size, while the 21mm T1.5 and 75mm T1.5 are slightly longer. Each focal length has a slightly different weight. The lenses feature a 67mm front filter diameter, except for the 75mm, which has a 72mm front filter diameter.

Construction Quality

The lenses are built with full-metal construction using aerospace-grade aluminum alloy. This ensures durability and robustness. They also feature an internal dustproof design, making them resistant to dust and splashes, which is essential for various shooting environments.

Price and Availability

The DZOFilm Simera-C lenses are priced at $998 USD each. All focal lengths will be available at launch, except for the 21mm, which will be released at a later date.

Conclusion

DZOFilm’s Simera-C lenses offer a compelling option for filmmakers seeking compact, fast prime lenses with high image quality and robust construction. Their compatibility with a wide range of cameras and competitive pricing makes them an attractive choice for both entry-level and professional users. With their thoughtful design and high-performance features, the Simera-C lenses are set to make a significant impact in the world of cinematography.
