Canon’s Latest Release: The EL-10 Speedlite
Canon has been busy with several product announcements, including the EOS C400, the CN7X17 KAS T, the RF 35mm f/1.4L VCM, and now the Canon EL-10 Speedlite. Priced at $249.99, the EL-10 serves as the successor to the Canon 430EX III-RT, which is priced at $299.
The Canon EL-10 marks the final replacement model in Canon’s hotshoe flash lineup, marking the company’s complete transition from EX-RT to EL. As an EL flash, it features Canon’s new multi-function foot, which does limit the compatible cameras.
Features of the Canon EL-10
The Canon EL-10 modernizes the decade-old 430EX III-RT mid-range speedlight, aligning it with Canon’s current flash standards. It replaces the old standard foot with the company’s new multi-function foot.
Ideal for amateur photographers transitioning into the mirrorless world or those reentering the world of flash photography, the EL-10 offers an affordable Canon entry point. It maintains a similar size and weight to the 430EX III-RT, and Canon claims it emits a comparable amount of light.
Despite the new Canon multifunction hotshoe, the EL-10 still requires AA batteries and does not draw power from the hotshoe. This is a disappointing feature, given the number of units on the market that feature lithium-ion batteries.
However, AA batteries are readily available if you run out of charge. Using standard alkaline disposable batteries, the EL-10 recycles in 2.5 seconds at full power. Switching to NiMH rechargeable batteries reduces this to an impressive 1.5 seconds.
Compatibility and Functionality
The Canon EL-10 can function as a sender, controlling other flash units, or as a receiver, controlled by another unit. It is also compatible with older EX-RT speed lights, though it only supports radio communication and not Canon’s older optical flash technologies.
The Canon EL-10 also features E-TTL II for automatic exposures, with the ability to convert the TTL reading to a manual setting. Its zoomable head ranges from 14mm (with the wide angle adapter) up to 200mm at the long end, allowing it to light up small events or illuminate a subject from a distance.
The EL-10 offers an 11-stop power range, going down to 1/1024th power. While its uses might be limited at this brightness level, it likely provides a very short flash duration. Canon has not yet confirmed the actual flash durations.
The Canon EL-10 Speedlite is available for pre-order now at a price of $249.99 and is expected to begin shipping this month.
