Introduction

SmallRig has introduced a new cooling system designed specifically for Sony, Canon, and FUJIFILM mirrorless cameras. These snap-on systems feature a heatsink and a fan, powered via USB-C, to prevent camera overheating and extend recording times. Let’s dive into the details of these innovative cooling solutions.

The Need for Cooling Systems

As mirrorless cameras have become more compact and feature-rich with higher resolutions, framerates, and codecs, heat dissipation has become a significant issue. Many hybrid cameras are not built to record footage for long periods, leading to overheating problems. One notable example is the Canon EOS R5/R6, which received considerable attention for its overheating issues at launch.

Competing Solutions

To address these overheating challenges, companies like Tilta and Ulanzi developed small cooling systems that attach to the back of cameras, with the LCD screen open behind the sensor. SmallRig has now joined this effort by offering three different cooling systems tailored for Sony, Canon, and FUJIFILM mirrorless cameras.

Features of the SmallRig Cooling System

The SmallRig cooling system is a compact unit measuring 7 x 5 x 2 cm (2.75 x 1.96 x 0.78 in) and is constructed from aluminum and plastic. This versatile unit includes eight mounting brackets, making it compatible with a wide range of cameras, including:

  • Sony: ZV-E10, ZV-1, ZV-E1, a7 IV, a7S III, a7C II, a7C, a6700, FX3, FX30
  • Canon: EOS 70D, R5, R6, R7, R8, R10, RP, R50
  • FUJIFILM: X-T4, X-S10

Design and Functionality

At the back of the cooling unit, you’ll find a power switch, a USB-C power input, a temperature display, and an air intake/outlet. The system requires external power as it does not have a built-in battery. SmallRig claims that the noise level of the unit is around 38 dB, making it relatively quiet.

Performance Gains

SmallRig states that when shooting with the Sony ZV-E1 (XAVC HS 4K60P) at an ambient temperature of 25°C (77°F), the cooling system can increase the maximum recording time from 30 minutes to unlimited without overheating. However, at 40°C (104°F), the gain is limited to an additional 8 minutes of recording time.

Price and Availability

The SmallRig cooling system for Sony, Canon, and FUJIFILM cameras is available for $49.99 (codename 4815). There is also a version specifically designed for Sony cameras priced at $69.99, although it does not appear to offer more efficiency than the universal version.
