Sony has introduced an updated version (Version 1.12) of their Camera Remote SDK, which now comes with additional features and a Wi-Fi connection, among other enhancements.

Moreover, the newly introduced Camera Remote Command functionality allows for the remote operation of a broad spectrum of 29 digital cameras. With this new specification document, Sony has eliminated limitations on third-party software development, facilitating the development of software that can remotely manage Sony’s digital cameras, including functions like shooting, monitoring, and file transfer.

This is noteworthy as the removal of these third-party limitations empowers developers to create their own software, which opens up a myriad of potential opportunities. These updates are accessible free of charge via the link.

Camera Remote SDK (Version 1.12) is an advanced command system tailored for development efficiency, which permits the manipulation and control of Sony digital cameras using Sony’s dedicated API. It’s particularly useful for the efficient development of programs with high-level APIs. This package comprises software modules, API references, and sample code.

Version 1.12 enhances the features of compatible models (Alpha 1, Alpha 7S III, and Alpha 7 IV) and now also caters to the α9 III. It offers a streamlined workflow for using Sony digital cameras for remote photography in the B2B market, including inspections, surveys, and e-commerce.

Version 1.12 and subsequent versions support the following features:

  1. Besides USB and Ethernet connections, it now also supports Wi-Fi, allowing for its use in settings where wired connections are challenging, thus broadening its scope of use.
  2. Approximately 100 new functions tailored for automation have been added, including remote key operations, the newly added Fn Menu operation, and Custom key, etc.

Additionally, it allows for the switching of the memory card slot for recording still images and videos based on the shooting situation, and the adjustment of the ISO AUTO upper/lower limit according to the shooting environment.

Camera Remote Command allows for the remote operation of cameras using a communication protocol that is Sony’s proprietary extension of the ISO standard PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol). This enhances the convenience of operating camera products from different brands with a single software, or when applying existing software to Sony’s digital cameras. This package includes command references and sample code for developers. Potential users could be healthcare system development integrators, ITS integrators, or photobooth photography system developers, among others.

Both the “Camera Remote Command” and “Camera Remote SDK” will be collectively referred to as the “Camera Remote Toolkit.” Developers can select the most appropriate method based on their development objective and application.
