Introducing the New Player in the 4K60 ProRes Market: Konvision A7S
Meet Konvision’s latest innovation: the A7S, a 7″ touchscreen monitor/recorder that supports 4K60 resolution signals with ProRes recording. Despite sharing a name with a Sony model, Konvision’s 7-inch A7S stands on its own.
Vibrant Display and Updated Connectivity Features
The A7S boasts a brilliantly bright 1,500 nits 10-bit display with the ability to present over a billion colors. Along with support for both 12G-SDI and HDMI input and output, Konvision offers users an up-to-date array of on-screen tools we’ve come to expect as we move into 2024.
What Sets the Konvision A7S Apart
Clearly, the Konvision A7S is geared to rival devices like the Atomos Shogun (available here). Both devices offer similar toolsets, however, there are some key differences. While the Shogun supports up to 6K resolution and ProRes RAW, the Konvision A7S takes a different approach.
High-quality ProRes Recording and Flexible Input and Output Options
The A7S caters to users demanding up to 4K resolution at 60fps with ProRes 422HQ, 422, LT, and Proxy. It’s not only equipped with HDMI and 12G-SDI input and output but can also translate between the two. This means users could output SDI from the camera and then output HDMI from the monitor to a wireless video transmitter.
Additional Features and Added Recording Flexibility
The A7S features pre-roll recording, providing a 2-second jump back in time when initiating recording at 4K. This can be handy for capturing footage from events with unpredictable starting times. The feature promises to make clips easier to edit together since you also get 10 seconds of pre-roll at 1080p. The A7S is not fussy when it comes to storage, the footage gets saved to a SATA SSD that fits in an internal slot, sidestepping the need for proprietary storage.
Ease of Power Replacement and Extensive On-screen Tools
The device offers a dual NP-F battery slot, maintaining power with just one slot filled. Furthermore, the hot-swappable capability allows for uninterrupted operation during battery replacement. Users can look forward to all the usual on-screen tools they need, including waveform, vectorscope, histogram, focus peaking, zebra stripes, and more. Additionally, it also supports timecode.
Lowdown on the Konvision A7S
Though the Konvision A7S appears promising, a side-by-side comparison with Atomos Shogun or Shogun Ultra would shed more light on its performance. Considering that the standard Shogun is considerably less expensive than the Konvision A7S, it would be intriguing to see how the latter performs against either.
Pricing and Availability Details
The Konvision A7S is soon to be available for pre-order at around $1,447.36 (American dollars). The release date and pricing information for the US market remain to be announced and it’s expected to ship in the coming weeks.
