Canon has recently unveiled their latest portable broadcast lens, the CJ27ex7.3B IASE T (CJ27ex). Despite its complex name, this lens is essentially a compact, handheld, and ENG-ready package with the zoom range of a box lens. Not only does it offer a remarkable zoom range, but it also comes with a built-in 2x extender. Canon has revolutionized the drive unit as well, introducing the innovative eXs V unit.
Broadcast lenses are known for their broad zoom range and advanced drive units that control all aspects of lens operation. Canon has taken this a step further with the CJ27ex, bringing significant advancements to broadcast optics. The CJ27ex offers an extraordinary 27x zoom range from 7.3mm to 197mm. With the addition of a x2 extender, this range extends to a telephoto reach of 394mm. This zoom range is usually found in large box zoom lenses, but Canon has managed to fit it into this compact design, making it perfect for ENG, smaller rigs, cranes, and more. Canon categorizes the CJ27ex as a UHDxs lens, which is their highest rank.
In addition to the impressive optics, Canon has equipped the CJ27ex with the fifth generation of drive units – the eXs V. It includes all the basic controls – focus, aperture, and zoom. A convenient screen-joystick-based system allows various settings. A USB-C input enables setting sharing with other cameras on set for easy operation alignment, firmware updates, and access to the lens’ maintenance history. The eXs V also features a focus breathing compensation feature. Canon has redesigned the 20pin connection at a slight angle to allow for placement on flat surfaces and stabilizers.
The CJ27ex brings the range of box zoom lenses into the ENG form factor, making it an attractive choice for ENG teams, sports broadcasters, medium studios, and more. The lens will be available in August 2024. The price is yet to be announced. The first look at the CJ27ex was at NAB 2024.
