After six long years since the launch of the EOS R system, Sigma has finally introduced its first lens for the Canon RF mount: the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN | C. This long-awaited release has excited photographers who have been eager for Sigma’s high-quality optics in an RF mount.
A New Addition to the RF-S Lens Lineup
The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN | C is designed specifically as an RF-S lens, intended for Canon EOS R bodies with APS-C sensors such as the Canon EOS R7, R10, R50, and R100. While it can be used on full-frame EOS R cameras in crop mode, it is optimized for APS-C sensors. The lens offers an equivalent focal length of 28.8-80mm and features a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture, making it a versatile and powerful standard trinity lens. Its weather sealing further enhances its appeal, especially for outdoor and travel photographers.
Compact and Lightweight Design
Weighing only 300g and measuring just 69.2 x 74.5mm at its widest, the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN | C is remarkably compact. This makes it an ideal match for smaller camera bodies like the EOS R100. The lens extends slightly as you zoom to the telephoto end but remains highly portable.
Notably, this lens is not a new design exclusively for the RF mount; it has been available since 2022 for Sony E, Fujifilm X, and L-Mount cameras. It retains the same specifications and optical formula, with 10 groups consisting of 13 elements, including a super-low dispersion lens and three aspherical lenses.
Optical Performance and Characteristics
The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN | C inherits some optical quirks from its predecessors, such as fringing, less impressive corner sharpness, and significant distortion, though the latter is corrected in the camera. Despite these minor issues, it is regarded as one of the best APS-C lenses available. Reviews have praised its lightweight build, fast aperture, and overall performance.
In one review, the lens was described as a “triumph” on the Canon RF mount: “Super light yet super fast, pint-sized yet power-packed, I keep coming back to the same key selling point: this is a standard trinity lens that fits in your pocket. What’s not to love about it?”
Pricing and Availability
The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN | C for Canon RF is set to go on sale on July 11, priced at £479 in the UK. Pricing for the US and Australia will be announced shortly.
This new release marks a significant step for Sigma and Canon RF users, offering a blend of portability, performance, and professional features in a compact package. Photographers can look forward to adding this versatile lens to their gear collections.
