Last month, SCN conducted an in-depth analysis of the hybrid world of in-ceiling speakers, polling five experts and presenting 16 in-ceiling speakers for consideration in upcoming installations. That roundup can be accessed here.
Following a week at InfoComm 2024 and through word of mouth, several more options have emerged to add to the list.
Theory Professional ic6
The Theory ic6, through careful processing and computer-optimized tuned ports, delivers remarkable low-frequency bandwidth, punch, and resolution. Notably, even in foreground music applications, a subwoofer is unnecessary. The ic6 features extremely wide dispersion to the highest frequencies, providing a massive coverage area, even in low ceilings. Constructed from premium materials, including a carbon fiber woofer, compression driver, and aluminum back can, the ic6 offers a maximum output of 112dB. This speaker is versatile, suitable for residential or commercial installations, surround sound or distributed audio setups, and even outdoor use when combined with Theory’s optional all-weather grille or bollard housing. Moreover, the ic6 can be installed in open-ceiling and exposed environments using Theory’s pendant housings. For large distributed installations, it includes a switch-selectable 70V/100V transformer that can be driven directly by Theory’s DLC Loudspeaker Controllers.
Holosonics Audio Spotlight AS-24iX
Differing from the rest, the Holosonics Audio Spotlight AS-24iX earned a mention due to its powerful sound technologies, as observed by SCN’s Mark J. Pescatore at InfoComm 2024. The Audio Spotlight X-Series features directional audio technology that creates sound in a very narrow beam. Its form factor replaces a standard 24×24-inch ceiling tile, enabling users to add highly focused sound to specific locations without disturbing the surroundings. This model, the AS-24iX, with SoundBeam technology, offers the strongest output and deepest low-frequency response among its counterparts, designed for noisier environments or areas needing more coverage.
Sonance James VXQ Range
The Sonance James VXQ Range speakers feature the unique Quadratech tweeter with Cymatic diffuser technology. With an IP67 rating, these speakers ensure durability and reliability across various environments. Users can configure their VXQ speakers when ordering, choosing between a standard Micro Trim grille or a Trim-less grille in standard colors at no extra cost. Additionally, these speakers offer configurations with an enclosure and/or a 70V transformer to meet specific application requirements.
Axis C12 Network Ceiling Speaker Series
The AXIS C12 Network Ceiling Speaker Series is both scalable and flexible, making it an excellent option for background music, paging, and scheduling daily messages stored within the speaker. These speakers blend seamlessly into the ceiling plane and come equipped with two I/Os, programmable LEDs, a microphone, DSP, and more. Available in two configurations—AXIS C1210-E 6.5-inch coaxial and AXIS C1211-E 4-inch dynamic cone—each speaker is a complete system with built-in AXIS Audio Manager Edge configuration software, supporting systems with up to 200 speakers and 20 zones. For larger applications, AXIS Audio Manager Pro is available. Utilizing SIP, these speakers can easily integrate with a VoIP phone system, allowing for remote health monitoring, weekly scheduling, and priority settings via a cyber-secure web browser.
