In a groundbreaking move, Sigma has announced its foray into the Canon RF-mount market with the unveiling of six new APS-C RF Autofocus lenses. This initiative, spurred by Canon’s innovative third-party licensing agreement, marks Sigma’s strategic expansion into the RF lens sector, positioning itself as a pioneer among third-party manufacturers offering licensed autofocus lenses for this platform.
The new lens range is anticipated to captivate a diverse audience of both photographers and videographers, thanks to its inclusion in Sigma’s acclaimed Contemporary series. This series is celebrated for its blend of sophisticated technology and affordability, with the new offerings comprising four prime lenses and two zoom lenses, thereby providing a comprehensive toolkit for a vast array of shooting scenarios.
Launching in July 2024, the DC DN 18-50mm F2.8 standard zoom lens will be the first to hit the market. It promises a 29-80mm equivalent focal length on Canon’s APS-C bodies, benefitting from a 1.6x crop factor. This will be closely followed by the DC DN 10-18mm F2.8 wide-angle zoom lens, which delivers an equivalent focal range of 16-29mm, expanding Sigma’s zoom lens offerings to encompass the entire spectrum of wide-angle focal lengths (10-50mm).
Sigma’s Contemporary series will also welcome four F1.4 prime lenses, namely the 16mm, 23mm, 30mm, and 56mm. These lenses are engineered to offer equivalent focal lengths of 26mm, 37mm, 48mm, and 90mm, respectively, on full-frame cameras, offering users of Canon EOS R100, R50, R10, and R7 models an array of high-quality options for prime shooting.
Each lens in this new suite exemplifies Sigma’s commitment to excellence, featuring advanced optical designs to ensure minimal aberrations, impressive low-light performance, and smooth bokeh. Notably, lenses like the 16mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary and the 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary boast intricate designs with elements such as FLD glass and aspherical elements, geared towards achieving unparalleled image clarity and sharpness.
Sigma’s collaboration with Canon has evidently enabled the enhancement of autofocus speeds and the incorporation of features like image stabilization and lens aberration correction across this new line of lenses. This collaborative effort signifies a new chapter in Sigma’s innovative lens offerings, even as Tamron ventures into the licensed RF-mount APS-C lens market, signaling an expanding horizon for Canon RF-mount users.
Although Sigma has reserved the pricing details of these lenses for a later announcement, the imaging community eagerly anticipates the arrival of these lenses, with five additional lenses expected to debut in the fall following the July launch of the 18-50mm F2.8. Sigma’s introduction of these lenses not only enriches its Contemporary series but also broadens the photographic and videographic capabilities available to Canon RF-mount enthusiasts, promising unmatched versatility and quality.
However, Sigma has yet to reveal the pricing details for these lenses.
